Soda Crystals
Soda Crystals are also known as washing soda and are not to be confused with caustic soda. Before the advent of detergents, it was the main product used for both cleaning and laundry.
Soda Crystals are ideal for removing grease and dirt, making them a true multi-purpose cleaner. If you are immersing your hands in them for any length of time, it's best to wear rubber gloves.
Soda Crystals are extremely good value, with hundreds of uses including:
- Removing burnt on residue in pots and pans
- Helping keep sinks and drains fresh and blockage free
- Removing moss and algae from patios
- A floor cleaner with natural disinfecting properties. Soda Crystals are approved by DEFRA for the prevention of 'foot & mouth' disease.
Soda Crystals are normally used by diluting them in warm water, but a rough guide to strengths is:
Mild - 1 tablespoon to one pint (500ml) of water
Regular - Half a cup to one pint (500ml) of water
Strong - 1 cup to one pint (500ml) of water
Top Tip:
The longer you can leave Soda Crystals on the surface, to be cleaned, the more effective they will be! Fifteen minutes is ideal; go for a cuppa and when you’re done, the grime and grease will wipe off effortlessly.
Soda Crystals can also be used to soften the water in your washing machine. This means you'll need less detergent – saving you money – as well as helping remove stains. It will also help make your clothes softer. With regular use, Soda Crystals will also help keep your washing machine free of limescale and detergent build up. Soda Crystals are also available in a handy Liquid Soda Crystals variety - ideal for surface cleaning applications.
Sold in 1 kg bags as a free-flowing powder and in 500 ml plastic bottles.
Finding Soda Crystals
Soda Crystals are available in most supermarkets - either in the 'laundry' or 'cleaning' sections. Many independent retailers will also stock them and even if they don't, they may be willing to if you ask them.
